Introduction
Sentence Correction questions present examinees with a short sentence that is missing either one
or two words. Examinees are asked to find an answer choice containing words that could best complete the sentence.
Sentence completion questions test your ability to recognize the cues in a sentence that give it structure and meaning.
The GRE now has a new type of sentence correction question, which has a chance of appearing on the test when you take it. The
new type of question will contain multiple blanks, and the words for each blank must be chosen independently. This new question type will
appear only once on the exam, and may not appear at all.
Sentence Correction Tips and Strategies
Read the entire sentence through before you begin to consider any answers. In order to fill in
the sentence with the correct words, you need to have a solid understanding of what the sentence is trying to say.
For this reason, you should read the sentence through once to get an overall grasp of what it is saying before you
begin to consider words to fill in the blanks.
Predict your own words before you read the answer choices. This will allow you to avoid the clever trap answers that
the writers create. It will also make you faster, since you won’t have to read every answer into the sentence.
Check your answer by reading it entirely into the sentence. Sometimes two words that independently would each fit into
a sentence won't make any sense when you use them together.
If you are stuck on a two-blank question, consider only one blank at a time and eliminate choices. If you know what one
of the words should be, you can usually eliminate two or three answer choices and guess between the others.
