A New Essay
Section
In March 2005, the College Board added an entirely
new section to the SAT. This new, third section requires students
to write a brief essay (within a 25 minute time period)
and to answer multiple-choice questions about grammar
and sentence and paragraph structure.
As a result of adding this new section to the test, the highest
possible SAT test score has increased from 1600
to 2400.
Changes to
the Math Section
There have been changes to the math section as well. The quantitative comparisons section
was eliminated
from the new SAT. Additionally, the new SAT adds some questions that cover
advanced algebra and trigonometry.
Changes to
the Verbal/Critical Reading Section
The verbal section has been renamed the "critical
reading" section. It no longer
includes analogy questions but
still has sentence completion questions. Shorter reading
passages supplement the longer reading passages found in
the old test format.
Time Limit
The new SAT takes 3 hours and 45 minutes, as opposed to
3 hours for the old version of the test. The 3 hour 45
minute figure includes an unscored, 25-minute "variable"
section, which is used to try out questions that might
be included on future versions of the test.
