Ivy League Admissions - Class of 2011

The big news in early admissions to the Ivy League this past year was, of course, the decisions by Harvard and Princeton to drop their EA and ED programs in the 2007-2008 application season. That made 2006-2007 the last admissions season that applicants to those schools had the option of applying under an early deadline – at least, for the foreseeable future. (Harvard has said that it will revisit the decision to end early action admissions in a few years and may reinstitute the program if it seems beneficial to do so.)

A less publicized piece of news from Ivy League early admissions this fall was the sharp drop in EA application volume to Yale. Yale received almost 12 per cent fewer applications under its non-binding Early Action deadline this year than it did in 2005. No one is sure of the reasons for this drop. Some observers speculate that the remarkably low 17.7 per cent EA acceptance rate Yale posted last year led some high school seniors to refrain from applying as EA candidates this year, perhaps opting to wait until they had reports of their fist semester grades and activities to strengthen their applications.

Schools sent notification letters to their fall 2007 early applicants (early action and early decision applicants) in mid-December. The following table summarizes the information we have to date on the number of EA or ED applications received and accepted at each school.
