Current Status
Things are picking up for our college,
graduate school, law school, and MBA
admissions consultants. A few of them are
already at their full capacities and several
more are rapidly approaching this point. We
have a maximum 72-hour turnaround time and,
accordingly, even our full-time consultants
work with a relatively small number of
applicants to ensure our clients receive the
prompt, customized attention they need to
maximize their admissions chances.
Completed Interview Transcripts
We have completed several dozen interviews
with current admissions officers to ensure our
consultants stay on top of emerging trends in
their specialized fields. We have two more
scheduled for this week (the week of August
16) and that will just about do it for us for
the year. We are excited that we can now
digest these internal transcripts, review the
trends from the many applicants we helped this
past year, and put all of this to use for our
favorite activity - helping applicants!

Business School Admission Calendar
Many of the top business schools have already
released their application deadlines and
essays. Even if you have yet to sit for the
GMAT, it still likely makes sense to review
the essay questions for all schools you have
identified as good ‘fits’ so you can begin
introspecting on how you intend to best
incorporate your story themes into the
applications.
Businessschooladmission.com,
by the way, is being regularly updated with
the essay questions and application deadlines
for the top MBA programs.
Thoughts on
the Admissions Essays
MBA admissions consultant Matt Whitaker
states, "The admissions essays should be like
love letters. Any school that receives one
should feel like it is the one and only - a
perfect match with the applicant. When I was
reading applications at Chicago and I would
sense that an applicant would be a better fit
at Kellogg or would prefer Wharton, for
example, I would usually drill in and
scrutinize other aspects of the application
more carefully." Matt is a Chicago MBA who
graduated with high honors and he spent two
years on the GSB's admissions committee.
GMAT Tip
GMAT tutor Bara Sapir states, "Clients come to me
thinking they will have to study several
textbooks of math to do well on the
quantitative section of the GMAT. The truth is
the prep time can be efficiently cut down by
knowing what is on the test and not attempting
to become a mathematician in the process. None
of these tests use trigonometry or
pre-calculus, but instead, use math that you
learned sometime between 7th and 10th grade.
Ironically, in addition to knowing how to do
the math, you need to read the question
clearly. KNOW what it is asking you to do. It
is often not the math that is tricky, but how
the question is worded.”

We provide professional assistance to all high
school students and our college admissions
news is organized by high school class for
this coming fall.
High School Seniors (Class of 2005):
Register for the next SAT and/or ACT exam date if you have not taken these
exams yet or if you are not satisfied that
your current scores reflect your abilities.
Now is also the time to begin – if you haven’t
already – thinking seriously about the college
selection process. You also have a little bit
of time left to develop your story and themes
for this coming fall’s applications. Don’t
hesitate to contact us directly if you would
like to schedule an appointment with one of
our highly-qualified consultants to receive an
in-depth and brutally-honest assessment of
your candidacy, advice on school selection,
and strategy formulation.
High School Juniors (Class of 2006):
Normally, high school juniors can focus
largely on their positioning for next year’s
college applications. However, a significant
distraction facing many members of the high
school class of 2006 is determining the
version of the SAT I for which they should
prepare. (Other members of this high school
class will have to decide if they wish to sit
for the 30-minute ACT Writing Test that will
become an optional component on February 12,
2005.)
Sara Hernández, a college admissions
consultant and former Assistant Director of
Admissions at
Cornell
University, states, "It
is especially important that students applying
to college in this transitional year for
standardized testing remain focused. The
college admissions process is an exciting yet
stressful period in the lives of many
students. However, students can maintain their
control over this situation by being prepared
for what lies ahead and by staying
focused. These actions will help students
manage their time and stress better, which in
turn will help prevent what should be an
incredible experience from becoming an
overwhelming one. Although students need to be
prepared to meet all admissions requirements,
within this process they should not allow any
one requirement to let them lose sight of what
is really important - finding the colleges
that fit their overall academic and personal
needs the best so that they may realize their
tremendous potential for success!"
Sophomores, Freshmen, and Eighth Graders
(Classes of 2007 – 2009):
You are strongly encouraged to register for
the most competitive curriculum for which you
are prepared. In addition to studying hard in
your classes, now is also the time to begin
thinking about summer enrichment programs and
positioning your future college candidacies
with extracurricular activities that can
provide the ‘wow’ factor necessary to
successfully differentiate you from the many
other applicants to the top colleges who will
also have high grades and test scores.

LSAT Test Volume
In our last newsletter (June 16, 2004), we
reported that, while the 2003-04 application
year represented the second-highest
application volume in
LSAT
history, LSAT tests administered during the
2003-04 application year declined 0.3%. That
quickly became dated when it was reported that
the number of tests administered this past
June increased 4.1%, an indication that law
school application volume should remain high
again this year.
School Selection Advice
Admissions consultant and former Associate
Director of Admission at
Penn Law
Renee Post
advises, “School
selection is a vital part of the application
process. Too many applicants limit themselves
when determining where to apply; looking only
at various rankings. Within the next few weeks
most law schools will publish their current
application materials. (In fact, some already
have.) Now is the time for applicants to
request current materials and be realistic
about their chances when determining where to
apply. Certainly, various rankings are a place
to start, however, applicants should also
consider factors such as curricular offerings,
clinical opportunities, placement rates and
bar pass rates when determining which schools
are the best ‘fits’ for them.”

Medical
School Admission Calendar
We have already helped many aspiring medical
school students submit their secondary
applications. The medical school admissions
committees have a rolling admissions policy,
i.e. as qualified applicants come through,
they are admitted to the incoming class.
Completing your application as early as
possible means you have just increased your
chances of being accepted – there are more
interview spots to give out and more seats
still open in the class.
2005 Applicant Considerations
Medical school admissions consultant Dr. Ramin
Rafie states, “It's definitely to applicants'
advantage to submit their primary & secondary
medical school applications as soon as
possible after the August MCAT and not wait
until October when scores return. Many medical
school admissions committees time stamp the
applications they receive and admit on a
rolling basis until their class is full."
Ramin worked on the admissions committee for
the College of Medicine at University of
California, Irvine.
